  • Marcus Johnson is returning to Keystone Korner Baltimore on November 8-9th! Keyboardist and bandleader mans the boundaries between smooth jazz and modern R&B. While pursuing his JD and MBA at Georgetown, Marcus Johnson independently produced and distributed his first CD (Lessons in Love), which sold more than 40,000 units; a phenomenal success for an unknown independent artist’s debut release. This album helped him launch his career as a renowned jazz keyboardist/pianist, and later, he released his second CD (Inter Alia), with staggering success.

This success caught the attention of Black Entertainment Television (BET) founder and businessman Robert L. Johnson, who invested and partnered with Marcus to establish Marimelj Entertainment Group. Under their partnership, MEG’s label Three Keys Music housed Studio 8121, a full-service recording studio, and two music publishing companies: Marimelj Music Publishing and Three Keys Music Publishing.

As head of Three Keys Music, Johnson produced and released on the Three Keys Music label national jazz artists: Michael Lington, Jaared Arosemena, Bobby Lyle, Nick Colionne, R&B singer, Alyson Williams, neo-soul songstress, Zahzarah; and smooth jazz Saxophonists Phillip Martin and Brian Lenair.

To date, Marcus has released more than fifteen Billboard charted CDs, and has the distinction of having his groundbreaking 2008 Billboard Top 20 Contemporary Jazz FLO (For the Love Of) Anthology, which consisted of three distinct CDs -- FLO Chill, FLO Romance and FLO Standards - all chart Top 10 on Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts simultaneously.

The Exchange is a three-month residency and performance series celebrating the best of Baltimore's jazz scene, running from November to February and hosted by Brent Birckhead. Each performance will be recorded and multitracked to capture the unique sounds and styles of the participating artists, and these recordings will then be curated into a compilation album, also titled “The Exchange," showcasing the vibrant and diverse talent within Baltimore's jazz community. This project aims to elevate and highlight local jazz artists from Baltimore, providing them with greater exposure and creating a lasting tribute to Baltimore's rich jazz heritage.

Saxophonist Brent Birckhead is an award-winning artist, whose aesthetic is an intersectional amalgam of traditional and popular styles. Unbound by genre, Birckhead’s approach to woodwind artistry is driven by his compulsion for creative risk and deep respect for legacy. Educated at Howard University (BME, MM), Birckhead was named best blues/pop/rock soloist and outstanding instrumental jazz soloist by Downbeat Magazine as part of the annual Student Music Awards. The Baltimore native's talent earned him the honor of performing and touring with legendary artists including Lauryn Hill, Nas, Wale, Eric Benet, Larry Graham, George Duke and many more.

  • The Music of Grover Washington Jr. & Bill Withers - Celebrating Grover Washington Jr.'s Birthday, December 12th!

Considered by many to be the founding father of smooth jazz, Grover Washington, Jr. was long the pacesetter in his field. A dear personal friend to our own NEA Jazz Master Todd Barkan, Washington made some of the genre’s most memorable hits including “Mister Magic”, “Black Frost”, “The Best is Yet to Come” with Patti LaBelle and “Just the Two of Us” with Bill Withers.

Lives, loves, dreams and possibilities – all connect in the enduring artistry of Bill Withers, an authentic American musical icon. He had several hits over a career spanning 18 years, including "Ain't No Sunshine", "Grandma's Hands", "Use Me", "Lean on Me" and” Lovely Day”, winning three Grammy Awards and nominated for six more.

When Eddie Baccus Jr. plays his saxophone creates timeless memories, each note creating moments that linger in our hearts forever. As a touring member of Pieces of a Dream for a decade and a half, Baccus Jr has had the opportunity to perform with and alongside a virtual who’s who in the traditional jazz, urban jazz and R&B worlds: Grover Washington Jr, Luther Vandross, Earth, Wind and Fire, Regina Belle, Stevie Wonder, George Duke, Bobby Watson and many more.
